ELISABETH BAS
SKU: 2ELISABETH BAS
Elisabeth Bas (1571-1649) Elisabeth Bas is best known for the cigar bands on which her portrait used to feature. In fact, it is no longer clear that the woman in the portrait really is Elisabeth Bas. Elisabeth Bas was married to Jochem Hendricksz. Swartenhont (1566-1627), a naval captain. The couple had four children, three of whom their mother outlived. When Elisabeth's eldest daughter Maria died, her mother took the task of raising her three grandchildren upon herself. Elisabeth and Jochem ran an inn on the corner of Amsterdam's Nes and Pieter Jacobszstraat called the Prince of Orange, catering to a well-heeled clientele. Many famous people visited the establishment. When Jochem died in 1627, Elisabeth continued the business. By the time she died in 1649, her estate was worth 28,000 guilders.
