Pattison briefly served in the Ohio House of Representatives in 1873 and then managed an insurance company. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in 1890. He served one term from 1891-1893 losing his reelection bid in 1892. Patterson was then elected governor in 1905 but died a year later in June 1906.
