Joseph Hewes born of a Quaker family in Princeton, New Jersey on January 23, 1730 and died on November 10, 1779. Hewes went to Princeton University and became a successful merchant by the time he was thirty. He moved to North Carolina where he was well like and elected to the Continental Congress. He was an early advocate for indepence and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. During the Revolutionary was he served as the first Secretary of the Navy, but died before the colonies achieved their independence.
