John Baptista Ashe was born in Rocky Point NC in 1748 and died on 27 November 1802 he was a planter, soldier, and statesman from North Carolina. . He was a Colonel in the Continental Army, serving at Valley Forge, and fought in the Battle of Eutaw Springs. Ashe was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons and was the Speaker of that House. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1787. John Ashe was a delegate and Chairman of the Committee of the Whole of the state convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution. Ashe was elected to the First United States Congress and the Second United States Congress.He was elected in 1802 as governor of North Carolina but died before serving. Asheville is name after him.
