William Henry Seward, Sr. Born in Florida, New York on May 16, 1801 and died on October 10, 1872. He was a Governor of New York, Senator and Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. He was anti slavery and a early member of the Republican party running trying to secure the Republican nomination in 1856. Abraham Lincoln appointed him Secretary of State in 1861 through the Civil War and the Johnson administration. During the War, Seward established a secret police force, which arrested thousands of citizens for disloyalty. What he probably is best know for today is f the U.S. purchase of Alaska which he finally negotiated from Russia for $7,200,000 on March 30, 1867. He was also instrumental in the annexation of the Danish Virgin Islands
