Jan III Sobieski born August 17, 1629 died June 17, 1696 was king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1674 until his death. His twenty-two year-reign was marked by a period of the stablity. He was popular among his subjects and was a brilliant military commander most noted for his victory over the Turks in the 1683 Battle of Vienna.
